Augmented Reality is a way to enhance what you see around you with the use of your mobile phone’s camera, sensors, and location services. If done right, applications of this technology can take the experience of the consumer to an entirely new level. Implementing this technology can be exciting and challenging at the same time. One of my favourite apps available for BlackBerry® smartphones today is Wikitude. Wikitude uses augmented reality to allow you to get information on places, find restaurants, discover people, play games, and even find and “see” BBM™ contacts near you. I was extremely excited when I first learned of the new Wikitude for BlackBerry 10 SDK being made available to BlackBerry 10 developers. During BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012 in San Jose, I had a chance to talk with Wolfgang Damm, Chief Development Architect at Wikitude, about the SDK and what developers can do with augmented reality on our new BlackBerry 10 platform.

Towards the end of BlackBerry® DevCon Americas 2011 I had a chance to meet with Martin Herdina, CEO of Wikitude® GmbH to chat about the popular Wikitude app for BlackBerry® smartphones, as well as the concept of augmented reality. Wikitude integrates social discovery with mobile technology, specifically cameras and magnetometers, to facilitate the experience. Martin also spoke at the DevCon General Session Keynote, providing insights on integration of BBM with augmented reality. BBM 6: Apps Made Viral

And we’re live! BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) 6 was released today along with a number of apps that showcase the power of BBM integration. Developers from around the world have leveraged the viral effects of the BBM APIs by allowing users to invite and share app experiences with their friends on BBM. They’ve also added new features – like in-app chat powered by BBM – for a more socially engaging app experience.
