The Washington, D.C. stop in the BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour – Enterprise Edition was a very exciting event to attend. In the heart of government activity in the U.S., we were able to chat with both agency and enterprise developers to introduce the BlackBerry® 10 development tools as well as enterprise mobility management with the upcoming BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10. Check out the video below for the full scoop:

What we learned, who was there, and what happened

BlackBerry 10 is getting all of us more excited every day. The live demonstration showcased fantastic UI elements like the flow, notification screen, and the BlackBerry Hub, as well as how application management is experienced by end users via App World and App World for Work. As a hobbyist BlackBerry developer on the side of my social media work at RIM, the screen real estate, crisp resolution, and smooth transitions have me itching to get started.

I’m thrilled to be able to tell you that registration for BlackBerry Jam Americas is open! BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012, taking place September 25-27 at the San Jose Convention Center in California, will showcase the bold, new direction we’re taking with the upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform. We’re committed to developers, and we can’t wait to share our excitement and expertise with you. Here’s the link to register.

Whether you’re a Native, Web, AIR or Android developer, BlackBerry Jam Americas will be a fantastic opportunity to dive into our open platform. Like our previous developer conferences, BlackBerry Jam Americas will feature a broad, compelling mix of content for beginners and experts alike. A high-level overview of BlackBerry 10 for each platform is just the beginning: attendees can choose from dozens of sessions that dig deeper than ever into the BlackBerry 10 platform, exploring the opportunities it presents for differentiation and revenue generation.

At BlackBerry Jam Americas, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with RIM experts and developer leaders alike. Through deep dive sessions and hands-on labs, we’ll help you realize the creative and business potential of your ideas. We’ll teach you how to engage users with beautiful UI and compelling user experience. We’ll show you how enterprise apps on BlackBerry 10 can change the conversation and take advantage of the BlackBerry architecture. And we’ll connect you with fellow developers and BlackBerry partners to network, collaborate and innovate.

Best of all, BlackBerry Jam Americas is our most affordable developer conference yet! Register by August 31st to take advantage of our Early Bird pricing. The Main Rate is $449 (an Early Bird discount of $150). And we welcome those of you in academia: faculty can register for $299, and students can attend for just $199!

This is an amazing opportunity to get in-depth information and hands-on guidance before the launch of our upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices.

What do you think? Are you as excited as I am?

As a follow-up to the blog post Developer Roadmap: BlackBerry® BBX and the BlackBerry® Java® SDK, I’m pleased to announce that the BlackBerry Java SDK v7.1 is now in beta for both the BlackBerry® Java® Plug-in for Eclipse® and the BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment on Windows®, with Mac support expected to arrive soon.

The primary API features of this release are:

NFC Peer-to-Peer API, allowing applications to share files and other data through NFC technology initiated communication with Bluetooth® handover.

FM radio API, which is designed to give applications the ability to manipulate FM tuner settings on BlackBerry smartphones with supporting hardware.

Profiles API, which brings more Super App features to applications, allowing them to query current profile settings and adjust their own application behaviour accordingly; or, conversely, intelligently change the current profile to match the user’s current activities.

BlackBerry 7.1 OS will be available as an update for in-market devices running the BlackBerry® 7 OS, and will also be available on future BlackBerry smartphones that will be running v7.1.

This beta release of the BlackBerry Java SDK v7.1 includes a simulator for the BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 smartphone running 7.1 OS, but developers leveraging net.rim.device.api.browser.field2.BrowserField are encouraged to also download an updated standalone version of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 simulator , which is designed to include a more stable environment for browser-based development.

To begin developing with these new features of the BlackBerry Java SDK v7.1 and to download the simulators for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone running OS 7.1, check out the BlackBerry 7 page on BlackBerry Developer Zone.
