You have your application or game approved in BlackBerry World. It’s a killer application. It follows all the BlackBerry UI/UX guidelines, integrates with the BlackBerry® 10 operating system and it runs lean. In short, you have a good feeling it qualifies for the Built For BlackBerry and 10k Developer Commitment programs. But how exactly do you get your application or game considered for the programs?

Well, it’s easy. Prior to January 21st, 2013 (the cut-off date for the 10k Developer Commitment), log in to your vendor account in BlackBerry World. Then, click the Manage Products link. Your screen should look something like this:

The first thing to take notice is the Status of your application. Before you can apply for Built For BlackBerry, the status must be Approved or Up For Sale. If your application has not been approved for BlackBerry World, you cannot submit it to Built For BlackBerry testing. If the status is approved, you will see the word Apply underneath the heading “Built For BlackBerry”. Go ahead, click that link.

Here is where you agree to the terms and conditions of the two programs. If you are only interested in the Built For BlackBerry Program, you only need read and agree to those terms. This means your application or game will go through Built For BlackBerry testing but will not be eligible for the 10k Developer Commitment. If you want to be part of the 10k Developer Commitment, then you must read and agree to both terms and conditions. Once you have read and agreed to the terms, check the boxes next to the appropriate terms and conditions and click Save.

Your Manage Product screen will be updated to show you have applied for the program and your application is Pending approval.

Once your application or game has passed the Built For BlackBerry testing, the term Pending will change to Approved. But what if something is amiss? What if your application or game is Rejected?

Don’t panic – you’ll see that there is a message icon next to the term Rejected. Clicking this message icon will show you the reason(s) why your application failed the Built For BlackBerry testing. You can fix those issues in your application and resubmit the application for Built For BlackBerry testing.

That’s really all there is to it! Built For BlackBerry will identify your application as a great BlackBerry 10 application. I am really excited to start seeing, using, and playing all the Built For BlackBerry applications and games. Remember, launch is January 30th 2013, so make sure you get your apps into Built For BlackBerry testing before January 21st, 2013.

On September 25th during the BlackBerry® Jam Americas keynote, Alec Saunders announced a new initiative called “Reasons to Believe”. This initiative has received great support by individuals who believe in the platform and want to develop for BlackBerry® 10.

Every day, users submit their reasons to believe either through our online portal or through Twitter® using the hashtag #BB10Believe. Even a Twibbon campaign has started in support of this effort!

We want to take some time every week to highlight some of our favorite Tweets from the past week. Take a look and if you haven’t tweeted your reason yet, do so today and use #BB10Believe. You might see it featured on the blog!

Over the last year, our mantra has been “you ask, we act”. We announced two new initiatives last week: Built for BlackBerry® and the $10K Developer Commitment. We’ve put a lot of thought and work into both programs – with two ultimate goals in mind; a chance for you to build a successful business on BlackBerry® 10 and a great app experience for our users. BlackBerry® WebWorks™ and our BlackBerry 10 Native SDK are designed to help achieve both these goals.

You asked (and rightly so): “What about apps built in AIR?” Well, apps built in Adobe® AIR® are awesome – we see them every day on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet. Josh even wrote a post about amazingly fast games built in Adobe Flash.

Well – you asked, and we’re doing. Starting today – apps built using AIR tooling (BlackBerry 10 SDK for Adobe AIR, NME, Flash Builder) are eligible for both the Built for BlackBerry and the $10K Developer Commitment programs.

We’ve said it before – quality matters. Can’t wait to see what you build.

Quality matters. You heard it from Alec Saunders in May at BlackBerry® 10 Jam in Orlando. Quite simply, better apps have a greater chance of success. We feel the best way to help you reach that success is to be fully committed to supporting our developer community’s efforts. Quality is the cornerstone of the developer experience improvements we’ve been working on, and RIM is dedicated to working with developers to bring the best apps to our customers.

Two of the ways Alec outlined our commitment to quality in the developer community and app ecosystem are with regard to app reviews and the 10K commitment.

Today we’re excited to share more information on these initiatives: the Built for BlackBerry Program and the $10K Developer Commitment.

In the Built for BlackBerry program, coming this fall, you will be able to submit BlackBerry® 10 WebWorks™ or BlackBerry® 10 Native apps for approval under the Built for BlackBerry program. Approval through the Built for BlackBerry program will signify to customers a higher level of quality. With a crowded app market, this designation may increase the chances of your app being downloaded. This will be free (for now). BlackBerry 10 apps that pass will receive “Built for BlackBerry” quality status, which you can display with your app on your site, in BlackBerry App World – anywhere you market your apps. This is a great opportunity for professional developers to powerfully differentiate their apps in BlackBerry App World.

You don’t need to complete any additional registration beyond your existing BlackBerry App World Vendor account. You just need to submit your app as usual, indicate that you’d like your app to go through the Built for BlackBerry program and agree to the Terms and Conditions, and you’re all set.

Those apps that have been “Built for BlackBerry” approved, may also be eligible for our revenue guarantee for BlackBerry 10 apps. With the $10K Developer Commitment, we’re putting our money where our mouth is. We know our dev community is the best out there, and we’re as committed to your success as you are. This initiative will also be launching in the fall so keep an eye out for the announcement to let you know when apps will start being accepted.

Here are some of the details on this offer: You must submit your BlackBerry 10 app to BlackBerry App World requesting approval through the Built for BlackBerry program by January 21st, 2013. Your app needs to earn(1) a minimum of $1,000 USD in BlackBerry App World – such earnings include digital goods sold through the Payment Service SDK (in-app payments).

If your app earns at least $1,000 USD, but less than $10,000 USD, remains on sale for a 12 month period as outlined by RIM and maintains its’ Built for BlackBerry designation for the duration of the 12 months and otherwise meets the eligibility criteria, RIM will pay you the difference between what you earned and $10,000 USD(2). Developers are only eligible to receive this one time. If your app earns less than $1,000 USD, you don’t qualify. If your app earns more than $10,000 USD — awesome! – you still don’t qualify (and don’t need the money anyway!).

The 10K Developer Commitment is a limited-funds offer and will continue only until the $10 million fund pool is exhausted. Funds will be distributed in order of priority based on the date upon which apps reach $1,000 USD in earnings.

Quality matters. And we have every confidence in our developer community’s ability to be successful, so keep those BlackBerry 10 apps coming! With your creativity and ingenuity, backed by our mutual commitment to quality, the BlackBerry 10 app ecosystem is going to be the best in the world.

More information on these initiatives is available on the BlackBerry Developer site.

(1) “Earns” refers to the amount that consumers pay for both paid downloads and in-app payments using BlackBerry Payment Service less any refunds and less applicable taxes included in the amount consumers pay, multiplied by the proportion of sales owing to the Vendor as defined by the Vendor Agreement. “Earns” does not include any advertising revenue. See Terms and Conditions for complete details.

(2) A maximum of $10,000,000USD will be distributed under this Offer. Limit one (1) payout per Vendor. Twelve month period to be determined by RIM.
