Last October, Zhang Dong, a developer based in Shanghai spent a week building a SNS Weibo (Chinese Twitter) app called MoWriter. It is now the most downloaded Chinese SNS app on BlackBerry World. He did expect few hundred downloads, but when he was invited to attend China’s BlackBerry 10 App Contest Award ceremony on March 30th in Beijing – he knew something big was coming.

Back in November 2012, China’s BlackBerry 10 App Contest kicked off by launching mini sites on cooperating developer community homepages. It caught the attention of hundreds developers right away. The 16 total prizes offered amounted to 350,000 CNY ($56,382 USD), with an additional 28 brand new BlackBerry 10 smartphones for winners, plus the opportunity to be promoted on the BlackBerry World carousal. All 16 winning teams were invited to Beijing for the award ceremony. One attending student developer said, “I need to thank you for the opportunity you gave us, no other company has ever done this before. BlackBerry truly cares about developers like us.” I am sure he will continue to build apps for BlackBerry 10 with his counterparts.

From November 2012 to February 2013, more than 500 developers signed up for the contests and more than 600 apps were successfully submitted to BlackBerry World across mainland China. In February of this year, 16 outstanding apps out of 30 finalists were picked by a team comprised of a BlackBerry app development manager, a marketing expert and selected BlackBerry consumers.

Sarim Aziz, one of the contest judges and head of Developer Relations in APAC attended the ceremony on March 30th to award the Grand Prize check of 100,000 CNY (1,588 USD) to Zhang Dong.

Mike Zhou, Developer Relations App Development Manager also presented the updated BlackBerry 10 platform technical overview, with a very interactive Q&A.

Cooperating developer communities played an important role in supporting the contest. Community leaders were also invited to be on stage to share their BlackBerry 10 experiences. Terry Zhao from HMTL5 DreamWorks said he was very satisfied with the exemplary performance of HTML5 on the BlackBerry 10 platform and he is expecting a number of high-quality games from his community this year. Xiangning Liao from the Flash Community was also very happy because out of 16 winning apps, four of them came from his group. Liao added, “I am glad to see how well the BlackBerry 10 platform supports Adobe Air and I am sure Flash developers will submit more BlackBerry apps!”

Meanwhile, the Taiwan BlackBerry 10 Enterprise App Contest wrapped up on March 20th. Pipedeal and Nlink (free version)/ (paid version) were the winners from Taiwan. Judges are currently reviewing submissions for the Hong Kong BlackBerry 10 App Contest. Six finalists will be selected by the BlackBerry team and public voters by April 9th. We saw great enthusiasm coming from the region and will keep everyone posted on the results.

Special guest post from Pratik and Ram – Ed.

We love working with developers from all around the world and especially if they make cool games that we can play on our new BlackBerry 10 devices! Right after BlackBerry Jam Asia 2012, we had an amazing opportunity to work with incredibly talented game developers from the Asia Pacific Region. To give you an idea on the amount of travelling it took: 16 days, 8 cities, 39800 miles per head! The best part was we found 260 happy game developers at the end of the trip. The GotGame Port-a-thon event comprised of locations spanning six Asia Pacific countries including Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong and China. During these intense one-day events, we got a chance to work with some amazing talent from the gaming industry. As a result, almost 800 high quality game titles were submitted over a span of just three weeks!

We would like to give a BIG Thank you to all the game developers who participated in these events and made GotGame Port-a-thon LIVE a huge success!

Guest post by Sha Sa, Developer Relations Marketing, China – Ed

“Port-A-Thon” is now a popular term among Asia Pacific developers. Developers have heard good stuff about BlackBerry GotGame virtual Port-a-thon in November, participated in the All-Aboard Port-a-thon on December, and then went nuts about the BlackBerry Got Game Port-A-Thon LIVE series that was held in eight cities in Asia Pacific.

When this weekend’s Port-A-Thons were announced, we got a really enthusiastic responses from APAC BlackBerry developer communities. They want to make sure quality apps will be ported, and a lot of them volunteered to host offline events across Asia to support developers to successfully port their apps. RIM Developer Evangelists, experienced BlackBerry developers and our BlackBerry Dev Group leaders will all be onsite all over Asia to support developers.

For the lucky developers who live in the below cities, be sure to pop by and get porting with us in the flesh!

Pre-event training courses, exclusive Market Insights session, and so much more – are you ready for BlackBerry® Jam Asia?

We’re counting down – exactly 30 days to BlackBerry Jam Asia 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand! Have you registered, or do you need more reasons to? Here are some updates that might nudge you to register now:

Pre-event Development Training

Don’t worry if you are new to BlackBerry® 10 development and think you may not be able to follow the sessions at the conference. Other than having sessions of different technical levels, we are offering complimentary one-day training courses where you will be able to learn the fundamentals of BlackBerry® WebWorks™ or the Native SDK/Cascades on the upcoming BlackBerry 10 platform before you head to the BlackBerry Jam Asia breakout sessions! Workshops – which will be held on November 27 and 28 – will be available in either Thai or English, and seats are limited. Sign up during the registration process to secure your seats, or check out more details about the training sessions here:
http://www.blackberryjamconference.com/asia/content/training

Market Insights Session to be announced

If you haven’t noticed, in the session catalog we have already announced 38 breakout sessions for the conference, with more to come. One upcoming announcement is the Market Insights session (you heard it here first!), where the RIM® Asia-Pacific Market Insights team will share consumer insights about smartphone users and their relationships with the mobile applications. Join us as we share what we found about consumer behaviors when it comes to applications, and how you can make sure your app speaks to them! Check back after your registration to see when this session is scheduled for.

Last chance for early bird registrations

With three days left for early bird registration, don’t miss the chance to gather with some of the greatest minds for BlackBerry 10 development at BlackBerry Jam Asia at low rate of $99 USD – register now, and we’ll see you there!

Last weekend was a smashing weekend for developers in Asia Pacific – almost 500 developers in India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippines got together and hacked their way through Friday evening to Sunday morning!

Yes, I am talking about BlackBerry® JamHack 2012, the first simultaneous Asia-Pacific-wide 40-hour BlackBerry hackathon. This weekend’s five simultaneous JamHack events were organized by Rubus Labs DevGroup (Bangalore), BlackBerry Developer Group India (Delhi), BBMYCoders (Kuala Lumpur), and PinoyBBDev and BBDevSG (Singapore)! While the 500 JamHackers were hacking in five different cities, their spirit and goal was admirably unanimous – hacking their way to the best app on BlackBerry® 10.

On Friday evening, participants started their 40-hour with registrations, networking and a series of RIM® -designed sessions, including local market insights session called “Country Vibes”, a “JamBytes” session on BlackBerry 10 design and user experience, and an introduction to the Built for BlackBerry program and the 10K Developer Commitment.

Each developer group helped participants to help form teams to ensure the best-rounded pitch on Sunday.

The hackathon started around midnight, and the dev groups had planned various icebreaker activities to wake up their contestants. If I had to pick my favorite icebreaker, it’d be the BBMYCoders Gangnam Style kickoff! Check out the video:

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

A great start is always important, but what’s better than that? Solid support and non-stop energizing activities to keep awake! Throughout the 40 hours, developer group leaders, co-managers, partners, business development teams and RIM Developer Relations were present to motivate and help our hackers. But it didn’t end at that: Our experts in RIM Canada didn’t want to feel left out, so they offered virtual help-desk hours for our hackers through Twitter® (#BBJamHelp) which saw over a hundred questions and tweets! Special thanks to @Naveenan5, @PratikSapra, @RSSessantotto, and @WaterlooErik for staying up through the weekend to support our APAC developers.

Other than providing support, the developer group managers were also busy keeping the teams entertained (and awake)! If the participants were bored of coding, needed a breather, or just wanted an excuse to have fun, there were exciting activities that kept them up. Let’s take a look at what tactics were used by our group leaders to keep their participants awake:

Massage Corner by PinoyBBDev
Tired from hacking? Teams in Philippines were rewarded by one of the best break activities they can get – a spa treatment onsite!

Quiztions by PinoyBBDev
Quizzes are fun, and even more so when they are done over Twitter. PinoyBBDev planned a social media quiz with small giveaways for the quiztion winners.

Pen in Bottle by BBMYCoders
While the Pinoy Devs were busy getting massages, the KL JamHackers were tasked by BBMYCoders team to complete a task — but what are they doing?

The deal is that they had to untie a pen from their back and drop the pen into a bottle behind them, with a paper bag over their head. Sounds fun and simple, but they were definitely trying hard to get the special prizes given out!

Some other fun activities:

Game on at the Gamezones

Best DJ

Singing Competition on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet

Of course, it wasn’t all fun and games — the teams had to work hard on getting the apps done within the 40 hours, and their hard work and efforts were all worth it! It absolutely showed during the pitching sessions – more than 100 apps were showcased across the five cities. Here were the teams from the pitches and their winning apps:

You heard it first from Alec during BlackBerry® Jam Americas, and today, we’re super psyched to be announcing the start of registration for BlackBerry Jam Asia 2012 (previously known as DevCon Asia)! And this time, we’re bringing the show to Bangkok, Thailand!

Two weeks ago at BlackBerry Jam Americas in San Jose, CA, our CEO, Thorsten Heins shared the vision and promise of BlackBerry 10 with developers. Now you can join us as you find out how to create apps and compelling content for BlackBerry 10 and have your apps ready to launch with BlackBerry 10 in the first calendar quarter of 2013.

Taking place on 29-30 November 2012 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, BlackBerry Jam Asia will give developers access to RIM experts, hands-on tutorials, labs and in-depth sessions to help them build on the new BlackBerry® 10 platform.

Why Jam with us?

Carrying on with our commitment to the developer community, we are excited to provide a BlackBerry® 10 Dev Alpha testing device to qualified developers who attend BlackBerry Jam Asia! Introduced in Orlando in May, the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha testing device was created exclusively for developers for the purpose of testing and debugging BlackBerry 10 apps during development.

Not that you need more reasons, but we want to convince you 110%! Developers, designers, enterprise partners and industry leaders attending the conference will gain hands-on experience with the latest application development tools for the BlackBerry 10 platform. Did I mention we are delivering a wide range of sessions?
