Extending the offer for a free BlackBerry PlayBook tablet!

Announcements

With today’s release of the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS, I am very pleased to announce that we will extend the deadline for the free BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet offer. Applications submitted by March 15th, 2011 will be eligible to qualify for the offer, providing an opportunity for both BlackBerry WebWorks and Adobe® developers to bring their applications to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

We have been thrilled with the response to the program within the Adobe community, and we wanted to provide our BlackBerry WebWorks developers an opportunity to showcase the great applications they are able to create as well! Full details on the conditions of the updated offer can be found on our offer page.

Happy developing!

This makes me really happy. I wanted to take part in this but wasn’t sure I could make the deadline, now I KNOW I can! Thanks!

I am so lost in this app creating process I’m just at the level of completely the AIRHelloWorld portion. But I don’t know whats the next step and I can’t find information anywhere to simplify things. Any one has so information for a fool like myself????

    • Mike Kirkup

Have you been following our “Getting Started Guide” (http://docs.blackberry.com/en/developers/deliverables/21877/)? That should help walk you through creating your first app from start to finish. In particular, once you have written your Hello World app, the next step is testing and deploying it, which is explained in the “Testing your application from Adobe Flash Builder 4” section. It has instructions for using Flash Builder 4.0 and the Flash Builder 4.5 beta (“Burrito”). Flash Builder 4.5 has better integration and is easier to use, so I would recommend using that if you aren’t already.

does “submitting” mean my app needs to be online in blackberry world by march 15 or does it mean I just have to handed my app in by march 15st, and it’s okay if my app waits for reviewing by blackberry?

    • Mike Kirkup

Kath – to qualify for the Free PlayBook you need to have your application submitted to RIM’s App World team for review. It does NOT need to be approved for sale by the 15th. Hope that clears up the confusion.

Really disappointed with the lack of feedback on how submissions are going.

  • Jman

Too bad the webworks is awful and useless. If RIM wants apps, then maybe they should make blackberry development possible? Incredibly disappointed. So long, free playbook. It really did look good.

  • goldfidget

The webworks SDK is really surprisingly good. Does it do border-radius? Of course! Can it handle text-shadow? Why yes, really surprisingly well. Bit of a faff getting the packager up and running, for me it required an upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I’m happy to forgive RIM for this.

For the most part they’ve done it sensibly and well.

    • Anonymous

      Thanks goldfidget for the feedback.

We are really excited about the WebWorks platform and how it enables a huge existing community of web developers to create compelling, rich applications on both the BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook platforms. I have been really impressed by the sophistication and capabilities of the apps that are coming out on the platform built using WebWorks.

Does anyone know how long it took for RIM to ship the free PlayBook? I received the “congratulations, confirm your shipping address” email 2 weeks ago and haven’t received my PlayBook or heard anything else. I live in Southern California, so I know the device is available in my area. Is this typical or does someone have a contact at RIM?
